Internet Café Tips for Investors in the Philippines – Part II (Location) September 25, 2006

If you play chess you will understand that no matter how powerful your piece is (ex. Queen), it is useless when placed in a position where its mobility is hindered. With that said, even if you have the best services (high-end computers, skilled people, quality services etc.) but if you are not accessible or visible to customers, you will not survive in the business.
In choosing a location for your business you should determine first who your customers are. For me, I would go with the following ratio:
10% High school students
60% College students
30% others (Working people, Relatives of OFW, etc.)
With that ratio, I would choose a location near Universities/Colleges but it is also near residential areas and businesses. As you can see, this is where major internet café are positioned like Netopia (inside shopping Malls that are near colleges). Although this would mean going head to head with the big players, there are other features that you could employ that they can not. I’m not talking about lowering your price; I’m talking about having your business outside the mall and opening your business early and closing late. This is because shopping malls usually opens at 10a.m. and closes at 9pm. I’ll discuss other setup that you can use in another post.
Well, that is my ideal setup… You may have your own… it depends on your risk tolerance. I’ll discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each location in consideration with your target customers.
Near High Schools
Advantages:
• Rest assured that you have customers whether or not they have school assignments or projects. It is because high school students mainly play games.
Disadvantages:
• Usually putting up an internet café with “gaming” services near schools are prohibited. You should check existing local ordinances. But even if there are no existing local ordinances that prohibits you to offer gaming services near schools… there is always a possibility that they will make one (especially if the parents of addicted students will complain to schools and ask help to your local government).
• Low sales during Saturday and Sundays. But the most dreaded season is when students are taking their long long long vacation!!! Aw! You should have enough savings to pay your bills during those months.
Near Colleges
Advantages:
- Compared to high school students, it is obvious that this market has greater resources to accommodate their gaming and internet needs and desires J
- It is more unlikely that there would be any “strict” implementation of any rule/ordinance that prohibits internet café near colleges. Why? Because internet café is more of a need than a want when it comes to college students. They are doing more research and project compared to high school students.
- Your “other” services will be availed more frequently by college students like printing services, research, encoding, webcams, card, tutorials etc. Unlike highschool setup, hindi na gaming and internet ang bread and butter mo! You earn a lot with these extra services.
Disadvantages:
- Again, when sem break comes expect a slight decreased in sales. But unlike highschool, you can still survive during vacation as there are summer classes in colleges.
Working People:
I just found a perfect place if you really want to target working people especially people who belongs to the upper mid class of society. You just need to compete with Netopia. The place is at Ayala, behind Glorieta. Their current price is 50 pesos an hour!!! Last time I went there, I was on the waiting line! I guess they have around 30 – 40 computers. Imagine that.

Nung mabasa ko itong blog site mo, naghahanap kasi ako ng information sa pagpuput up ng internet cafe sa pinas kasi sa tingin ko ito ang isa sa pinakamabilis kumita na business, Natuwa talaga ako kasi alam ko agad na kapatid ang gumawa nito. Naisip ko agad, ang galing talaga ng kapatid, talino, at syempre salamat sa Dios para doon.
Actually I’m only 19 years old and andito ang buong pamilya ko sa London (mama at papa ko ha hindi sarili kong pamilya, hehehehe) at gusto ko maginvest sa isang business para lang kung sakaling mapauwi kami ng pamilya ko sa pilipinas kahit papaano may mauuwian kami kasi worst comes to worst eh kung sakali mang mapauwi kami tiyak wala kaming mahahanap na bagong trabaho. Although super business minded ang parents ko alam kong makakaisip din sila ng paraan kung sakaling dumating ang ganon kahirapan at alam kong d naman kami pababayaan ng Dios kaso alam ko din na d na sila bumabata. Kaya naisip ko na habang andito pa kami at medyo malaki ang kinikita at mas malaki ang halagang mailoloan (dahil X91.84 agad yun), maigi ng maginvest sa business.
Idea palang ito ng makulit kong isip at hindi pa talaga navovoice out at nalalaman ng kung sino dahil inexperienced pa ako at d ko alam kung tama ba tong iniisip ko. High school palang kasi ako naiisip na namin (oo namin, kasama ng isa kong classmate) na balang araw maganda ang magpatayo at magpatakbo ng Internet cafe (dati pa nga naisip namin na magtayo ng bar cafe pag mayaman na kami, bata pa ako nun at d pa kapatid at napakaraming oras na mangarap, hahahaha).
Alam kong mahirap magput up ng business ng hindi ikaw mismo nandon at nghahandle pero kung may trusted naman akong kakilala at maging partners, ok naman siguro yun.
Anyway, mapaguusapan din namin lahat ito at sasabihin ko sa ‘far to be’ (hindi soon to be, hehehehe) partner ko kung loloobin ng Dios. I’ll absolutely tell him to check out this blog entry first and talk to you.

1. Time Tracker (Automatic shotdown): Install Dynasoft Cybercafe Software (free license up to 10 PCs). It’s a UK-based company. You can monitor stock & inventories, see daily activities, issue promo offers, loyal customer benefits (membership card), remote re-booting/shutdown of PCs, send messages to customer/customers remotely, etc. This is what we are using and I like the Free Version than the Professional Version.
2. What to do with noisy gamers?: Just isolate Gaming Area from Surfing Area. use headsets, of course.
3. Antivirus, Spyware, Adware. Protect your PC: We use Deep Freeze Enterprise instead. This will freeze your chosen drives. So whatever program or virus that your customer has downloaded, your PC will go back to your default setting once re-booted.
4. Do you know what keyloggers are? Protect your gamers: Just use Deep Freeze and re-boot PC every use.
5. Do you know what parental filters are?: Some DSL modem software has it’s own filter settings.
6. Is your electric bill killing you? What to do?: Minimise comsumption by turning off PCs if not in use.
7. Can you trust your cashier or your assistant? How to hire?: You can hire anyone. Just use Dynasoft Cybercafe Software. You can limit your cashier’s access to canteen (stocks), price setting, and any administrative/owner’s powers. You can also see daily activities in event loggers (time PC activated).
8. SSS, Tax, Permits what to do with them?: Nothing. Just be a law-abiding citizen. =)
9. Other services that can generate more cash for your i-c: foods, foods, and foods.

Hi, Please also give me a copy of the feasibilty study that you have. Saan po magandang bumili nang pc na affordable. I checked Savemore in Riverbank Mall and its 8,500 pesos for the CPU(512mb pentium 2.6) and 1,900 pesos for the black monitor. They also said that they can give me a discount if I purchase several PC.

i only read your blog yesterday, may 25, 2008. it seems you have a great perpective on the i-cafe business. i too would like to have your fs because i am on the verge of taking over an internet cafe which i friend left to me… currently the cafe is not operationg = shutdown. the owners left the country and sold the cafe to a friend but the deal didn’t push tru. currently only one cafe is operating in the area. that cafe is inside the subdivision. the location of this cafe i am going to take over is infront of the subdivision gate/guardhouse. my email address is marcosamson@yahoo.com
